Minnesota Elections are Secure and Accurate

A probe into the 2020 election in Wisconsin found “absolutely no evidence of election fraud” while costing taxpayers over $1 million dollars. President Biden’s victory in the state “withstood recounts, multiple state and federal lawsuits, an audit by the nonpartisan Legislative Audit Bureau and a review by a conservative activist law firm.” The AP also reported from a survey of election officials across the country that “the expanded use of drop boxes for mailed ballots during the 2020 election did not lead to any widespread problems.”

Minnesota election law mandates a post-election review process, the use of bipartisan election judges to handle ballots, and county and state canvassing boards who put politics aside to review and certify election results. Furthermore, while hand-tallying random precincts has proven the accuracy of the ballot tabulators used in Minnesota, federally accredited test labs and the Office of the Minnesota Secretary of State certify all voting equipment before local election officials hold Public Accuracy Tests

The League of Women Voters of Minnesota has been a trusted source of voter registration and education for more than a hundred years. Recently, League members in Dakota, Sherburne and Carver County powerfully voiced their support for election officials and provided the facts of Minnesota’s election integrity at county board meetings to help counter the mis-and dis-information spreading across the country. Thankfully, Minnesota’s secure and fair elections and nation leading voter turnout does not seem to be at risk, but, according to experts, voter fraud claims undermine trust in the democratic process.

Certifying election results and administering elections is a priority of both Democrats and Republicans. The election denial movement is inspired by former President Trump and the Jan 6, 2021 attack on the US Capitol. As League members can tell you, asking questions to understand the facts and getting involved are necessary parts of the democratic process, but undermining the right to lawfully cast a ballot will not be tolerated. The fact is that Minnesota takes pride in its elections and to ensure that every vote is counted, and LWVMN will continue to empower voters and defend democracy.
