Advocacy and Program Action Team (APAT)
Our History
The Advocacy and Program Action Team (APAT) is one of the Board’s responses to feedback received during the “Members’ Direction to the Board” during the 2019 Convention.
Board of Directors committed to be very active with local Leagues
Build an infrastructure to share ideas and best practices for membership and for inclusivity
Provide more clarity between national and state alignment
The first meeting was held in January 2020.
Our Purpose
The primary mechanism for sharing information, best practices and League activities for Advocacy and Program Chairs
Identify and share resources to support local Advocacy and Program efforts
Align work across the organization – local Leagues, LWVMN and LWVUS
Provide peer-to-peer support, encourage collaboration on events and support for events hosted by other local Leagues
Provide assistance and support to members new to the Advocacy and Program roles
Skills development (e.g., speakers, staff updates, Lobby and Observer Corps training, etc.)
Provide a safe space to ask questions and clarify how local Leagues, LWVMN, and LWVUS align and work together
Support Capitol events (e.g., Day of Action, Day at the Capitol, LWVMN Rally, Earth Day, etc.)
How APAT Supports the Strategic Plan
Sustainable – Align work across the organization (local Leagues, LWVMN and LWVUS)
Inclusive – Create a collaborative culture and increase engagement and participation
Purposeful – Share in the efforts and successes of working collaboratively to achieve goals
Educational – Contributes to an educated electorate; leverage our members’ power and resources to increase participation and to inform voters
Combining Advocacy and Program Chairs
Advocacy and Program share the same the space. Both:
are focused on education
may develop policy briefs/conduct in-depth studies
educate and inform members, the public and policy makers
Inviting both Chairs to the table allows for consistent dissemination of information and encourages collaboration on efforts
NOTE: Each League’s approach to committee roles is different; therefore, members should look to their local League Board of Directors for clarification on Chair roles and responsibilities
