Part III: On Voting

How to Be a Voter

  1. Make sure your voter registration is up to date. If you move, change your name, or haven’t voted in more than four years, update your registration at mnvotes.org.

  2. Educate yourself on the issues and candidates. Check when your local LWV candidate forums are, read coverage in local papers, explore candidate websites, and attend candidate and issue events.

  3. Become an engaged citizen. Get involved with issues and organizations you care about. Explore current social and political issues at www.isidewith.com/polls. Access multiple news sources to get information. Your local library has internet access, newspapers, and other periodicals. Contact candidates and campaigns with questions.

  4. Get involved. Help a friend or neighbor register or volunteer for a voter registration drive. Help a friend or neighbor request and send an absentee ballot. You can drop off up to three ballots for other voters at your County Election Office. Drive a friend or neighbor to their polling place.

  5. Know the Voter’s Bill of Rights. See the rights guaranteed to Minnesota voters at mnvotes.org.

  6. Pledge to vote. Download LWVMN’s League in Action app, and receive elections reminders right on your phone.

  7. VOTE!

  • In person at your assigned polling place on Election Day: Find your polling place location at mnvotes.org. Request time off work to vote on Election Day if needed. You have the right to take time off work to vote without losing your pay, personal leave, or vacation time.

  • By absentee ballot: You can vote by mail, or early in-person, starting 46 days before each election. To request your absentee ballot in person, find your County Election Office or satellite location at mnvotes.org, or request a ballot online at mnvotes.org. Return your absentee ballot to your County Election Office. Your ballot will not count if it’s received after Election Day. Return your ballot by U.S. Mail or delivery service (such as UPS or FedEx). You can also return your ballot in person no later than 3 p.m. on Election Day.
