LWVMN Statement on Census Apportionment Announcement

ST. PAUL - Today, the U.S. Census Bureau released apportionment counts for each state based on population counts from the 2020 census. Minnesota will keep all 8 congressional districts.

Nick Harper, Civic Engagement Director for the League of Women Voters of Minnesota issued the following statement: “This is a tremendous win for Minnesotans, who will retain full representation in the U.S. House of Representatives. Next, the Census Bureau will release redistricting data files later this year.

This detailed data will be used to draw new voting maps through the redistricting process. Whether the state legislature or the court draws these maps in Minnesota, the process must be open, honest, and accessible to Minnesotans. Redistricting must be a civic process, not a partisan horse race. New districts must be formed in a way that represents Minnesotans accurately and fairly, no matter where they live, the color of their skin, or their level of income.”
