League Update on Congressional District 2

A major party candidate in the U.S. House of Representatives District 2 race, Adam Weeks, has died. Minnesota law states that the election will be moved to a special election in February due to the death. However, a federal law states this election must take place in November. There is currently a lawsuit to determine when this election will take place (November or February). As a precaution, LWV encourages voters to vote for their preferred candidates on the November ballot, though the election may take place in February instead.

October 9, 2020 Update: On October 9, the judge issued an order in this case. The functional effect is that the November election will determine who wins this seat, and there will not be a special election in February. You can read the court order here. However, this case is already being appealed. We will keep voters posted as well as we can.
