After decades of grassroots advocacy, voting rights of over 55,000 Minnesotans were recently restored by the state legislature and Governor Walz. Eligible adults who were convicted of a felony are allowed to vote once they have completed their incarceration. The new law makes the biggest addition to the state’s voting population since 18-year-olds were granted the vote in the early 1970s.
Restore the Vote bill sponsor, State Senator Bobby Joe Champion and leading backer, Secretary of State Steve Simon, will discuss both the need for the legislation and how it will be implemented in a discussion via zoom from 7:00 – 8:00 PM on Monday, April 10. They will be interviewed by Pulitzer Prize winning, former Star-Tribune journalist, Dave Hage.
When the bill takes effect in July, the state will join 22 other states and the District of Columbia in granting this right to previously incarcerated felons.
The event is sponsored by Clean Elections Minnesota and co-sponsored by League of Women Voters MN, Common Cause MN, Minnesota Council of Nonprofits, Second Chance Coalition, We Are All Criminals, Minnesota Voice, Plymouth Area Indivisible, Indivisible MN03, We Choose Us, FairVote MN, and Restore the Vote.
