Artificial Intelligence (AI): An Evolving Technology too Big to Regulate?

  • Bremer Room at Great River Regional Library 1300 West Saint Germain Street St. Cloud, MN, 56303 United States (map)

With the release of ChatGPT in November, 2022, a new chapter opened in the evolution of Artificial Intelligence (AI), based not only on the massive quantities of data involved, but on the types of computations and outputs enabled by the newest generation of chatbots.

We will start with a brief overview of recent developments in AI, and then our guest speaker John Houston, PhD Phil, will address:

  1. AI's new abilities in natural language processing,

  2. the social ramifications of AI, including impacts on democracy, and

  3. what we can/should do moving forward.

League members will provide examples of AI-related regulatory initiatives currently being considered (or that have been adopted) by the state of Minnesota, Federal agencies, Congress, and the White House. For more information visit www.lwvsca.org.
