The introduction of information and communications technologies into the electoral process creates both opportunities and threats. Opportunities include online voter registration; access to/tracking of ballots; identification/outreach to underserved and low-voting communities and people with disabilities; and immediate access to election information, such as candidate positions and election sites. Technology can create risks that include hacking of voting machines; Artificial Intelligence spreading false, misleading information; and difficulty auditing electoral results. Expert panelists will discuss the impact of technology on elections, exploring how to take advantage of opportunities to empower voters while mitigating potential risks to vulnerable populations posed by new technologies.
Featured speakers include Michele Bishop, Voter Access & Engagement Manager for the National Disability Rights Network, Legal Services and Paul S. DeGregorio, a former chairman of the U.S. Election Assistance Commission who was appointed to the commission in 2003 by President George W. Bush, and is a senior fellow at the Democracy Fund.
