Our chapter has been around for decades! We serve the beautiful lakeside communities of Deephaven, Excelsior, Greenwood, Shorewood, Tonka Bay and Woodland. While most of our members reside in the South Tonka communities, anyone with an interest in the area is welcome to join. Membership in any League chapter offers great opportunities to get involved in issues that are important to YOU at the local, regional, state, and national levels.
Our area is truly unique. We have six communities each with their own mayor, city council and services, and consequently, can be very busy in election years holding candidate debates for each of them! The structure of our communities dictates much of the work we do, such as hosting an annual mayor's forum with the local Chamber of Commerce. The forum serves to inform citizens of what is happening in their own and surrounding communities and provides a platform to ask questions.
Much of our work is centered on protecting the right to vote for all citizens and the legitimacy of elections, but we are much more than that. Throughout our chapter's history, we have helped our communities institute recycling programs, and have formally endorsed the Lake Minnetonka Conservation District and a system of inter-governmental cooperation among our adjoining municipalities. Our members have initiated studies on local drinking water and have joined forces with other leagues to examine topics such as senior housing, redevelopment, and water quality.
Recent programs featured speakers who addressed the environment and the beautiful natural resources that surround us, including panel discussions about water quality, parks and trails and bee habitats. The small town atmosphere of our communities also provides an opportunity to approach local leaders with our concerns from Voter ID to the decline of the bee population.
Many members take part in a state League project to register new voters at citizenship ceremonies. In June we awarded our third Educate, Advocate, Scholarship to a senior woman at Minnetonka High School. We enjoy meeting our neighbors and spreading the word about LWV South Tonka by hosting a booth at the Farmers' Market, Crazy Days and Apple Day in downtown Excelsior. As a League we value each member's gifts and talents as we gather for our annual Red, White and Blue party and holiday brunch. We love the unique character of our communities and our members who proudly representSouth Tonka.
