LWV Rochester has earned the trust of the public as the premiere sponsor of candidate debates in Olmsted County. Our Voter Service committee works hard to have all the city council, county commissioner, school board and state legislative candidates meet in face-to-face events in October of each election year. We have been proud to work with our cosponsors, the Rochester Post Bulletin, the Rochester Chamber of Commerce and Rochester Community and Technical College. In addition to the hundreds who attend these events, another cosponsor, the Rochester Public Library makes the debates available to hundreds more by streaming them through their web site.
In 2012, the LWV Rochester experienced a historic first with the publication of our book “Taking the Lead: Rochester Women in Public Policy, 1970-1990”. Volunteer writers from the league interviewed 25 local women who had been the “first” in their field. Whether it was being a judge or being the first woman in the Minnesota senate, the stories of these women capture a moment in local history when women went from being a participant in public policy to leading it. We are in our second printing and we still are being asked to share the story of how this project came about and the content of the memoirs of these extraordinary women.
