Detroit Lakes Area

The Detroit Lakes Area LWV is a vibrant, enthusiastic group of new and long-time members who are passionate about improving the democratic process at every level of government. First founded back in the 1970s, today we focus on hosting non-partisan and unbiased public forums on candidates for office and timely topics of concern to our population. Our members are the people in Becker County who are actively engaged in a wide range of interests and who typically lead the way when others are content to sit on the bandwagon. Much of our work is done in partnership with many other local organizations who share our passion for nonpartisan political activity.

As one member recently put it, “We have issues!” But here’s the difference between League of Women Voters and other formal and informal organizations — we study the issues from all perspectives, hold thoughtful discussions, reach a position on an issue through consensus, and then advocate for that position locally, in St. Paul and in Washington, DC. We have a strong focus on voter education through candidate forums for city, county, school board and other races in Becker County. Our legislative town hall meetings provide voters with an opportunity to hear first-hand what’s happening at the Capitol. Our voter education efforts start with introducing children to the voting process through our “Kids Vote” activities at community events.

60 minutes or less — that’s our guarantee! LWV Detroit Lakes gathers monthly at 5:01pm on the third Tuesday of the month at LaBarista. A brief social allows time for getting a coffee or glass of wine and then we devote no more than 60 minutes to conducting our business. On the drawing board are plans for hosting a showing of “Iron-Jawed Angels,” community forums and other events, beginning in September 2015. All LWV events are open to the public and all are welcome regardless of gender, ethnicity, political affiliation or religious background.
